Noise upon start up
I had the exact same problem
Remanufactured starter fixed it.
Not worth the time and money to rebuild - reman is cheap.
The old starter gear retracted noticeably slower when tested.
I had the issue in Florida, the land of forever summer... Warmth did not seem to mitigate the problem.
[Sarcasm] It's called replace your worn out parts when they wear out. It's an effective resolution to the issue of having broken old shit that doesn't work right. [/sarcasm]

Just push start the car every time - problem solved.
Afaik, there are two "problem" noises you may hear - one is a metallic grind or crunch right when the engine fires, which is typically the starter. the other is a raspy noise when the engine is cold, which is the TCT.
My starter is 14 yr old and about two times a year will crunch on fire - not bad enough yet for me to swap it out but its on my list for a winter project.
