Default Grinding noise upon start up

First off, I did read through the "Your problems solved here" thread and search around for an answer before posting this.

The problem:
You know that grinding sound your car makes when you hit the start button when the car is already running? My car makes a similar grinding noise (coming from engine compartment) when I first start it up in the morning ONLY when it is cold outdoors (below 40F). Once, I have driven it, and re-start it, it no longer makes the aforementioned noise. Is this normal? I wouldn't think so.

It happened this morning as well as shutting off approx. two seconds after starting it.

Yes the oil is topped off and the car runs beautifully. As far as I know, the car is tip top.

If this is obvious, I apologize in advance for my ignorance.

I appreciate all input.

Thanks,
Chris

It could be your starter drive gear isn't fully retracting on a cold start. It may be sticking till the drivetrain warms up a bit. Clutch chatter doesn't just do it on the cold start. It'll do it at other times, too.

Xviper is correct. It probably is the "bendix" which is the gearset and clutch that are on the end of your starter. Depending on how handy you are, can be an easy fix. Pull the starter, and either replace the bendix with a new one, or remove the old one, clean everything up and use a good quality grease to lubricate the splined shaft of the starter motor. Personally, I replace the unit, since the time to remove/install is worth more to me than the cost of the part.

The big question now for you is if you can buy just the bendix. Typically you can for American cars, not sure for a Honda since I've never replaced one on an S2000...

Good luck. BTW, you should get this taken care of, since the grinding you hear is starter gear not engaging with the flywheel gear. This will damage your flywheel gear over time..
