Noisy noisy rear end...
Hey everybody,
Recently bought a '00 s2k with DC header/CAI, apexi dual exhaust and 18" BBS rims.
91k on the car, but engine/clutch were replaced at about 65k (have receipts).
Since I bought the car, i've had a noise from the rear. Started off sounding like brake friction and got progressively louder with time/mileage. Now there is also a whine only during deceleration which seems to happen loudest at around 30mph then goes away.
Originally thought it was wheel bearings after reading some threads. Had the car jacked up over the weekend, and the wheel bearings weren't where the original friction sound was coming from.
Under further investigation, the sound was definitely coming from the center of the car. At this point i noticed grease on the frame of the car and a little on the exhaust. Seems to be coming from the rear cv of the propeller shaft.
Would this also cause the deceleration whining noise I'm hearing?
Already found a good deal on a used AP1 prop shaft, will be putting it in on Saturday, and will be locating a good 6mm hex socket for the job with an extension. Just wanted to see if I should be worried about anything else being wrong too.
Thanks!

Welcome Dano...
Post up some pics of the grease spattering. Note that the diff mounts are "liquid" filled and the fluid in them looks like a deep red runny grease.
If you can also post a vid so we can hear the sound the car is making...it would help.
Just based on the description, I would still guess bearings are the problem.

Thanks for the response!
I kept thinking wheel bearings to, but there's no play in the wheels/hubs, and they aren't getting hot after a long drive.
I'll be sure to check the diff mounts while I'm under there on Saturday, but I'm 99.9% sure that the main noise was coming from the prop shaft cv where the grease was coming from.
If the noise is still there after I swap the shafts, I'll try and post up an audio clip of the sound.
Thanks!

Installed the new prop shaft, had to grind off three bolts in the process, new ones will be here today. Ran the car up on jacks with the remaining bolts in just to check for the noise and it is gone.
Looks like the prop shaft has a crier valve on each end to spit out grease when the cv fails. I had no idea that a bad prop shaft would make such wild noises, but apparently it does.
I'll post up any other findings when we put on the remaining bolts today.
