Thumbs down Normal Cruising RPM? is mine too high?

Hey guys I`m a newbie. I just bought a used 2001 S2k last monday and I noticed that when I am going 70-75 mph in 6th gear my rpm gauge reads 4500-5000 RMP. Is that normal. I know the displacement is only 2.0L but I am comming from a 2.4L K24 on a TSX and even goin 80mph in 5th gear I`m only at 4300 in that car. O yea and my engine buzzes ALOT when I slow down in gear especially in 3rd and 4th. Please help.

That doesn't sound right. I cruise at around 4,400 at 75 MPH. Double check your RPM/speed the next time you go out.

The engine buzz is probably due to the clutch disc rattling. There was a TSB about this and an updated disc solved the problem in my MY 2000 car. Unfortunately, your car is now too old for the TSB to be done by the dealer. It doesn't hurt anything, it's just annoying. So either live with it or take the oportunity to change to a new (updated OEM) or aftermarket clutch.

The only explanation I can think of for ~4700rpm @ 73mph (or whatever you're getting) is that the previous owner put in really short gearing so he could drag race or something. If you do a search on "gears", you'll get a zillion hits, but I recall a fairly recent thread that summarized the differences (in mph ranges, maybe rpms) for OEM and a couple of popular replacements.

Shorter final drive gears seem to be a fashionable modification to these cars, so maybe you're in fashion. HPH

75 mph in a stock AP1 is 4000 rpm in 6th. For you to be going 5000 rpm in that gear at that speed, you would have to have at least 5.1 gears. Somehow, I doubt this the case as this gear ratio is rare and has not been reported being used on this forum. I suggest you take the car up to 75 mph again using cruise control and once the speed has stabilized, THEN look at the tach. Either that or stop while driving.

At 75 MPH my 1993 Spec Miata (in 5th) turns a couple hundred RPM lower than my 2003 S2000 (in 6th) .
