I'm glad this post has been bumped, so I can be a nerd and explain why you should not do the airbox mod trick. Even though you gain power, what you lose is the ability of the box to separate dust and particles. As air enters the chamber and has to create a vortex as it navigates the sharp edge that separates the inlet from where the filter is. Since the air is lighter than sand and dust, and random stuff it's easier for air to make the turn over that divider, than it is for solid particles, this causes the first part of the box act as a particle separator.

For sure this design works. As I always see a little sand and dirt at the bottom of that first section.

Maybe put oil in the bottom as it would catch debris

Except the bottom of lid has an air guide, that funnels air from inlet to second chamber. So how would these debris manage to reach first chamber, if guide channels air and particles in it to second chamber?

Ok, lets assume there is an easy and obvious answer, and its clear that particles really will go to first chamber. Is it really an issue?

I've had this mod for like 10 years and probably 80k miles. I'm not clogging up stock filters. In fact, I've only replaced filter once since I bought car. Have a new filter waiting when this one eventually clogs, but so far its still clean enough.
