Default Oil blow by?

Ever since I bought my car, the exhaust tips have always been black. I was wondering if anyone else has come across this problem or not.

I also have to fill up the oil every 2-3 weeks at about a quart or so depending on how often I check the oil. Has me kind of worried right now and hopefully the fix is easy. I don't drive the car hard at all by any means.

Thanks

Its normal to have soot on the exhaust tips. they do burn oil. keep checking it often.

Regarding the oil levels dropping....is that a concern I should have since it's constant? Does this happen often with other owners?

hmmm...a quart every 2-3 weeks...how much do you drive the car?

it is common for the S to "eat" oil...mine did when I first bought it...at 39k miles...then I started changing the oil at about 39500-40k and it slowly went away...I use mobil 1 10-30, occasionally it will use about a 1/4 of a quart every 3000 miles...but nothing I really need to worry about.

and the exhaust tips being black...its because the car runs a little rich...thats normal too...just get some chrome polish and polish them up...they should stay clean for about a week or two

All S2k's use oil. how many miles do you get, before the oil level goes down a quart?

Also the more you VTEC the more oil the car will eat.

There's an issue with rounding quick right hand turns. When turing, the weight transfers to the outside wheels (the left wheels when turning right). The PCV valve is on the left and this forces some of the oil in the crankcase to the left and it goes straight up to the PCV valve which gets re-circulated back into the intake manifold and thus burned in the engine. It's just a normal thing w/ the S2K. Check your oil level often and top off when at least 1/4 quart low will help insure you have enough oil.

We really noticed this at Fall Colors when we rounded turn 7 at Beaver Run. A puff of smoke would pour out the back, which worried some of us till we discovered what was going on. Like I say, just check your oil level often.

On a related note, I remember a few yrs ago (maybe 5 by now) Pat Goss on Motorweek said it's not uncommon for a car to use a quart in 800 miles. That seems a bit excessive to me, but I'm no expert like Mr. Goss.

Wow thanks all for the information. I just added a quart of GTX 10-30 and I noticed a little leak around the valve cover. I wouldn't say leak but dried oil at the least. Hope this doesn't mean anything.

A quart every 2-3 weeks seems rather excessive to me. A quart every oil change (3750 miles) is about the limit of what I would consider "normal" or "acceptable."

The black exhaust tips come from carbon build-up due to lots of extra fuel being put into the engine. Like others said here, the cars are turned to run rather rich, especially the 00-01 cars. I just use stainless steel polish every time I wash the car to keep the tips shiny.

ALL S2000s (some years more than others) have black exhaust tips just like any internal combustion engined car. This is not a "problem". Have you checked up the exhaust tips on any other (non-brand new) car?

As for your oil usage, by not including how many miles you put on the car in those 2 to 3 weeks, this gives us nothing to go on. If you are putting a qt of oil every 500 miles, then you need to worry. If you are going over 1000 miles in that time, then not such a big deal. If you car is blowing blue smoke out the back, then worry.

You have the typical valve cover "seapage". If you can see actual oil accummulation, then you need a new valve cover gasket.
