Default Oil Change

Newbie- first time post

Just wanted to get different opinions to see if this is a good idea or not. After changing the oil and filter, I remove the ignition fuse and try starting the car. I turn the key on for about five seconds to turn the motor and stop and then do it again until the oil indicator on the dash goes out. Reinstall the ignition fuse and start the car normally and check for leaks. The reason for this is to fill the filter and oil ports before actually stating the car. Is this a good idea or does it really matter. I have been doing this for years with my other cars and have not had any ill affects. Will doing it this way hurt the motor? Any thoughts.
Thanks and a great site

It won't hurt anything, but you are still spinning the engine over at 1st with no oil pressure. The only way to prevent that is to install a oil accumulator, that can supply pressurized oil before startup.

Thanks for the input. I just hate the way a motor sounds the first few seconds after an oil change.

With all my other vehicles (over 30 in my lifetime), I've been dumping the oil, putting on a new filter, putting the new oil in and just firing the thing up and letting it idle on its own for a 1/2 minute or so and have no had any ill effects. Two of them even reached a ripe old distance of nearly 200,000 KMs before I sold them to people who used them for a while longer.

I think what's important is that you do what has worked for you and what feels right for you.

Bad idea. Without ignition, you're spraying unburned fuel into the engine, which will washout the cylinders.

I see your theory though....pulling the fuel pump fuse would be the smarter fuse

You could just pour oil inside the oil filter before you install it. Remember, after about six hour's, most of the oil drip's back into the oil pan anyhow. No matter how you slice it, unless you have the oil accumulator Slow speak's of, the engine will be relatively dry upon cold start up.

I forgot to mention, this is why 80% of all engine wear take's place at start up. (unless maybe you track your car )

The oil pump is efficient enough to provide oil throughout the engine within several second's anyhow. (the same amount of time that you would be spinning your engine without the ignition)
