Default oil change gone wrong! oil everywhere!

so I changed my oil about two days ago on my 00' s2k, have done it myself since I bought it no problem, but today after I left my house about 5 miles away I noticed this huge cloud of smoke following me and I thought there's no way thats my baby! but sadly I was very wrong, right away I pulled to the side of the road shut everything off, knew something was horribly wrong by the trail of oil behind and under the car! after I cried for about 5 minutes (yes guys cry too) specially when is something with our cars, I checked the oil filter and noticed it was a little loose, but it couldnt be, when I did the oil change I tied it like rambo!!! and I guess thats where I went wrong, the seal is twisted and I think thats the problem (hopefully) the car still out there and I have to go later with a new filter and 5 more quarts of oil and hoping thats the problem. have any of you have or hear about this happening??? please get back to me asap, thanks!

The oil filter is supposed to be installed hand-tight--not ratcheted down. Perhaps that is the source of your problem. Sorry for your situation.

over tightening the filter will cause the seal to actually brake or not seal correctly. like retvet said hand tight is good.and you should put fresh oil on the seal before you install it.

Something similar happened to me in my del sol. I changed it and it was fine on start up, but the minute I revved it, oil was spewing everywhere! Was pretty crazy because I've done heaps of oil changes! In the end, it was something so simple as te rubber ring came off of the filter and was stuck to the engine so when I screwed on the new filter, it was just a matter of time until it warmed up and came loose. Easy fix, but man, what a mess!!!

Also, as you may know, be sure to put a light amount of oil on the rubber seal of the filter...never dry fit.

You probably still have more oil yet to burn off of the engine, so expect the smell to linger.

Good Luck, sorry to hear about your misfortune. Good thing you caught it before the 'seize'. Could have been worse.
