Thumbs up Oil Level Question

so i have had this car for the past 6 months and have enough problems but...its ok i can deal with it, but now i can't get an oil level reading on my dipstick. I changed my oil 2 days ago and it read fine, i went to check it for S&Gs again and there is nothing on the stick...so i made all of my checks and there is oil there, i even drained the oil and filter and put new oil and it still will not read on the dipstick. never had this problem but what do you think it could be.

i have the same problem too. the oil is so clear still that you can barely see it on the stick but its there. very faint though. no need to change oil again. i changed my oil on sunday and im sure theres a enough in there. i remember putting in 5qts and it was at the H and i drained about half a qt and it was about half way so i put in 4.5ish qts this time. so it should be a bit half way. i plan to try and check today but im sure its there just very had to see.

Standard fill is 5.1 qts, but I can tell you from doing over 100 of these that it almost ALWAYS takes more. I see an average of 5.5 qts if you do a good drain and are replacing the oil filter (I always do).

So, I put in 5 qts...............button everything up and cycle the motor for about 30 seconds. Pull the dipstick and tilt it to catch the oil in the light. You can see it sitting on the surface of the stick on an angle. It typically indicates at the bottom of the "xxx"s so I go at least half way up by adding another 1/2 qt. Keep in mind the full range of the "xxx"s is one full quart.

I drain my oil for 30+ minutes..I get every drip out I can. I jack the rear drivers side up to get more oil out. I remove the filter. 5qt puts me about dead center between the L and H every time.

I always check my oil level when my car is in my garage. This way, being on an incline, like in my driveway, has no effect on the reading. I don't know if and how much the dipstick reading on the S2K is affected by this but I know my other cars have varying readings depending on location and how long it has been since the engine stopped running.

Also make sure you wipe the dipstick clean before each check. The "X's" really make reading the level so much easier. Sometimes, one side of the dipstick reads clearer than the other so read both.

On my S2K 5.1qts reads right at the 4th "X" from the bottom (an "X" away from H).

This comes up about once a month, wipe carefully and hold it up to the light.

Use a good light source and view both sides of the dipstick at an angle. Like others have mentioned, if the oil is clean it's difficult to see on the dipstick.

4.5 quarts is not enough; use 5.1-5.5 quarts during an oil change.

Make sure the car is level when checking oil level as even a slight incline can change the reading by a couple of Xs.
