this sounds like a dumb question, but i still need to ask.

Could you rank the following oils in viscosity ranks, say low to high:

0W40
10W30
10W40
5W30
5W40
15W30
15W40

Those are multi viscosity oils.
So the 0W-40 is thinnest when cold and the 5W-30 thinnest when hot.

Then it also depends on the brand.

Any list you make would be open for debate.

The 2 15W-xx are the thickest in general I think.

Just read the oil journals. All this has been covered.

Last Friday I had Motul 10w-30 put in the engine, Amsoil Synthetic in the transmission, and LE-607 in the differential. I'm very pleased with the difference in pickup. The car now feels like it has an invisible "sail" on top pushing it. Previously, I was running Mobil 1, Honda MTF, and LE-607.
heh, you can't "feel" the difference any change in oil makes. no human on earth has the senses and perception to be able to detect such miniscule and almost undiscernable changes.

there is no "rank" in determining the best oil.

in case you didn't realize, the engine is designed around a specific weight of oil spec. hence the reason different cars have different recommended viscosities.

there are a TON of topics in the oil journals regarding viscosities. please read there as others have suggested.

i have read most of them but all they say is just use the recomended as I will, but i am just trying to understand the meaning behind everything.

by Rank I meant not which is better but in terms of viscosity
