the wire I need to use to trigger a new relay for a twin Hella Supertone #85115 replacement effort? Or do I need to find the horn trigger wire in the wire bundle somewhere?

Bump

Nobody?????

All I'm trying to do is replace the stock horns with a louder (and bigger) set of Hellas.

If it only has one wire going to the hron, then yes, thats the trigger. The horn grounds through the chassis.

Thanks. Without a wiring diagram (and my VTVM is on the fritz) I simply wasn't sure.

Best!

These Hellas aren't "air horns", are they? If not, you can wire them up directly to the existing wires (you have two stock horns, right?) and just increase the amperage of the fuse in the box near the battery. That's what most of us did in our cars that came with just one horn.
(ie. no relay needed.)

XViper,

Nope. Not air horns but the big 118dB 350/500Hz electrics. Definately needs a relay, heavy gauge wire, and it's own fuse.

Hmmm, I have these "Highway Blasters" (Fiamm) - 125 dB. They are duals with the little snail horns on them and I wired both of them into my '00 the way I described - no relay, just upped the fuse. They've been working well for over 3 years.

XViper,

These draw a lot more current. Specs show 144 watts and recommendation for a 30amp fuse.

As for decible ratings, I'm reminded of the stereo amplifier output ratings wars of the 70s and 80s. Unless we know exactly how the loudness level was measured..... That said Fiamm has a good reputation too.

BTW I'm still using a set of Hella airhorns that were on a Miata for 3 years and are now in their 4th year on my Forester! Great products!

This thread came just in time. I'm installing Fiamm horns I recieved yesterday. So, What about air horns. Is there a need for a relay? It came with a relay but the less wires the better.

I'll let XViper answer for the S2K, but on both my '96 Miata and my '99 Forester I used a relay. Then again my airhorns werre installed to augment the stock horns and not replace them. LOL
