Default Over 100 reading on my oil pressure gauge

Certain times when driving, normally when the car is cold, I hit over 100 at 3k rmp's and up. After it warms up, you see it in the 80's and 90's which is normal from what I read. Idle's around 35-50. But I have noticed certain times, even when the car is warm, my oil pressure reading while driving will go to 110-120. Even today I hit 124 at one point. Do you think the oil pressure sender is bad or can our cars go that high? I read somewhere we have a pressure relief valve at 100psi but if thats the case, it doesn't seem to be working for me. Performance wise, my car seems fine.

Thanks

Normal. The oil's viscosity effects pressure.

My oil pressure reads as following:

Cold start: 80-90

Keeps dropping slowly til car is at operating temp until it finally reaches 35-40 at idle, 82-88 at 4k rpms 65mph on highway.

I have yet to see mine go into the 100s, so I would suspect something of that.

Even on a cold start, and if you immediately start driving, you should see 100s possibly, but not when warm. Oil thins out the more you drive, therefore, oil pressure drops.

For example, on a long drive, usually 30-45 minutes of highway, I usually see 23-27 psi at idle. That's normal considering the oil thins out with heat. And btw, this is 10w40, which is thicker than the average 5w30

Yea most of the time, its exactly like what you specified. But other times, like today, it goes over 100 off and on and it idles at 45-60. So in general it seems as though its off by 15-30 during those times. I have a spare oil pressure sender so I might just change that out since the gauge is new.

Problem is if it's really 100 psi you're getting the bypass valve kicking in. I believe it's set for around 87psi. So that's not good.

Incorrect. Oil pressure on a f20c is regularly over 100-120 psi. Nothing to worry about.

Total oil pressure has nothing to do with the bypass valve in the oil filter, the oil pressure relief valve(in the oil pump) should be in bypass long before any car gets close to red line. Every car I've owned in the past 40 years has done this. To much oil pressure is a bad thing if the car has, lets say 100psi at 2500 rpm's with hot oil but if he does have 100 psi at 4500 and max's out at 120 at 8000 rpm's then I would not worry about it. To find out if the oil pressure sender is bad, pull it and put a mechanical gauge on to see if it reads the same or not. You read more on here about not enough oil pressure than to much oil pressure(I think this is the first one that I have read about to high of oil pressure).
