Leak down and compression performed today at Honda. Compression fine in all 4 cylinders. Timing chain loose and a couple valves sunken a bit. They're going to do a valve job. Thoughts?

if youre mechanically inclined, i recommend you do the work yourself....youll save a ton of money and its not terribly difficult...if thats not an option, make sure they replace the retainers as well

I wish I had the time.. I've done a valve job on my previous car. An e46 m3. No easy task - time is my only restraint. Running a restaurant is a bitch.

When you say valve job do you mean they're going to replace the valves or do an adjustment? An adjustment will not fix your bent vavle issue that was caused with the overev.

Did you throw a CEL? If not I don't think you'll have a bent valve. AP2 retainers should be able to take 75 in 2nd, I know because I've done it before.

What did the leakdown say and what were the compression numbers? From what I've been told with AP2 retainers either the car is fine following an overrev or you bent valves right then and there in which case you should have a CEL showing a misfire in one or more cylinders.

No CEL thrown. I'll have to check with Honda to see exactly what the numbers were, but according to the message the shop foreman left me, the numbers were "like new"

Then why have the head rebuilt?

Bent valves don't always cause a CEL. My first cylinder had a bent valve leaking 40% and the car seemed fine. I never thought it was underpowered and no CELs were on.

Unfortunately you have not specified AP1 or AP2. If it's an AP1 you definitely have an issue. Sunken valves=cracked retainers on the AP1. Most would say fix it yourself. This is because you can change the retainers from the top. Honda won't do this for fear of dropping one of their minuscule retainers (x8) during the operation. So they pull the head....much increasing the cost and "never will run the same" aspect. But a 6-2 shift I think you are done. Valve float + contact = bent guides. If you are not inclined or have time....have it done. If you have an AP2 I have no idea. Many friends of mine from the original Tochigi AP1 line openly joke about the AP2 and all the safety put in so non-car drivers can drive this car (and save warranty money). Not sure if even the AP2 can take a 6-2......pretty major driver error.

It happened to me a couple of years ago at the track.
Surprisingly, it turned out the catalytic converter.
Inside honeycomb got messed up and it was making a ticking sound.
The ticking sound was very similar to the TCT or bent valve.
