Default Overrev

So while driving today, I accidentally went into 2nd instead of 4th at around 75-80. I hit redline and the gear grinded a bit. Did I just overrev the car and need to check the valve retainers?

Thanks.

Probably best to check.

Finally got around to pulling the valve cover. Everything looked good in there. None of the keepers were recessed. I also did a compression test. All were between 237-240. I can't believe it, considering the car has 130k on it.

2nd redline is right at 62 mph. So you being at 75-80mph that's like 10-11k Rpms, no? So you did damage something it's probably not gonna show up right away but keep your eye on it.

After my car was over rev'd I checked my retainers about once a month for like 4 months. Didnt see anything. Then once I got up the courage to take on the retainer swap myself I finally swapped them and sure enough 2 were cracked, and didn't show any signs for 4 months.

Food for thought. Better safe than sorry

I accidentally shifted into 2nd while I was going about 55mph one day.. I caught it before the tach hit 8k because I didn't drop the clutch hard, but I should probably check mine out when I get back from AIT...

Broken retainer damage can take many thousand miles to show.

They can go 35,000 miles undetected, then suddenly let go.

Put 6000 miles on it, then check them again. This is your best bet.

Ok, will do. Thanks for the info! I was thinking about getting my valves adjusted pretty soon, maybe I will do that in 6k so there are a second set of eyes on the retainers.

unless the retainers are visible sunk, no ones going to see the cracks by just doing a valve adjustment...the cracks are usually visible from the underside of the retainer

Actually.... the retainers rise UP the valve stem.
It looks like the cotters sink but they do not.
But that's obvious.
That's me.
