Overrev'd: leads to 5th hard 2 engage
Thats a serious over rev my friend. I have to believe you stretched a few exhaust and most if not all of the intake valves. The retainers aren't the whole story in an over rev situation.
^^Totally agree. My S has been parked since the incident and I'll be looking at intake and exhaust retainers on Monday morning. I still don't understand the notchy shifting. It's also hard to row thru the gears with the car off... so it doesn't have anything to do with the syncros.
I didn't post a thread asking for relationship advice. Got that under control. Let's keep things ON TOPIC.
bgoetz: We're going to throw it up on jack stands tomm. and see what we see and go from there.

^^compression test is a waste of time. Car idles fine and has no loss of power.
I pulled my valve cover and checked both intake/exhaust retainers and the keepers were str8 up flush with the top of the retainers. I was very surprised by that. I went ahead and checked my valve clearances and they were good as well.
The notchy shifting is still there but is getting a little better. 5th gear no longer needs FORCE to be taken out at speed (it still catches a little tho). With engine off, it still requires FORCE tho.
As to the poster who stated that it could be my pressure plate:
My belief is that if the pressure plate was faulty, all gears would require a little force to come back to neutral...
1st-4th = buttery smoothness
5th is the only one catching (slight hang with car moving)(requiring FORCE to pull out of 5th with engine off w/clutch in or out)
