Overrev'd: leads to 5th hard 2 engage
I would have thought if you did a "true" over rev, you wouldn't have been bouncing off the rev limiter at all. Gas cut rev limiter isn't going to do anything against a mechanical over-rev. If it was really bad, you would have seen revs shoot straight to 10k+. So it sounds like you got lucky?
If you slammed the shifter hard enough you may have bent the selector a few microns. Im not saying this happened or is even possible. On second thought ,I think it may be possible. That could explain your belief that over time ,shifting returns to normal as the shift fork is gradually bent back to normal.

As to the poster who stated that it could be my pressure plate:
My belief is that if the pressure plate was faulty, all gears would require a little force to come back to neutral...
1st-4th = buttery smoothness
5th is the only one catching (slight hang with car moving)(requiring FORCE to pull out of 5th with engine off w/clutch in or out)
, one is on the counter shaft the other is on the mainshaft

i would do a compression test, just to be sure...
You - 1, Me - 0
Even tho the retainers looked to be in perfect condition, I did a compression & Leak down test today, because I'm paranoid.
225, 225, 230, 225
Each cylinder slowly leaked down and stabilized about 5psi lower in each cylinder from the above readings. I figured this was just excess pressure from turning the motor over.
My conclusion is that my motor miraculously survived a massive over-rev; but I will continue to check my retainers at least every other month or so.
I still have the 5th gear problem. And I do not see how it could be the clutch, but my clutch buzz is louder at idle, and I can hear a whirring sound that sounds alot like clutch buzz while cruising in any gear. Is my clutch causing 5th to be notchy? Who knows...
