Default Overrev'd: leads to 5th hard 2 engage

Has anyone else experienced this??

I searched and came up empty handed..

Here's what happened:

Down shifted from 6th to 3rd to pass some slow mazda 3.

Hit about 80 - 85mph and went to shift into 4th and accidentally dropped it into 2nd.

Pegg'd the limiter about 3 - 4 times before I could get the clutch back in.

To make me even more pissed - My gf is yelling at me about driving fast (which I didn't need at the time because I was already pissed at myself for potentially having to change retainers, and/or my engine blowing before I can get it back home.)

After I hit the limiter, I immediately put her in neutral and checked for a CEL while coasting. There was no CEL, no abnormal noises at the time. So I dropped it back into 6th around 70 mph. I came upto my exit and downshifted normally. When I downshifted into 5th, it was hard to engage. It was hard to disengage as well. Shifting was really notchy past the 3rd - 4th area. Even pushing the shifter over to the right in its neutral position is bad. If I push down to move over to engage reverse, it will stay there until I tap it back over to the neutral position. (I read somewhere that continually engaging 5 - 6, 6-5 on the way back home could help it return to normal.)

I also noticed a weird grinding noise while cruising in 5th as well. It sounds like the noise your brakes make when your brake pads are shot. Not the high pitched squeal, but the almost inaudible grind from the rotors being chewed up. (This might be in my head, because my gf said she didn't hear anything.)

I'm checking my retainers tomm. for sure, but I know that they wouldn't cause the weird shifting. Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions on how these two problems relate(if at all)? I really don't want to do a transmission overhaul; but it looks inevitable as of now.

definetly check and probably replace your retainers, even if they arent cracked yet they could down the road when you least expect it. the shifting thing sounds to me more like a transmission problem like maybe the synchro's somehow got screwed up. this is just my opinion, im far from a qualified mechanic

Yeah, it sucks big time. I'm thinking that the gear problem is coincidental; but who knows. All I know is that I have problems, and that grinding sound is there. But I'm not for sure if it's coming from the drivetrain or transmission?? Hard to tell from inside the cabin.

No F22. I have a spare head over at my Gpa's shop if it's that bad. Hopefully if anything is damaged in the head, it's just retainers.

^it probably just wore the synchros in slightly better...? Isnt it like the clutch, when you burn it, it gets slick,. but if you drive it correctly afterwards, it gets better?

No, syncros are not like the clutch, once they are worn they are worn. But, misshifting into 2nd is not going to cause syncro problems on 5th, or any problem for that matter, atleast not that I can think of, they are not even on the same shaft.

My guess is that a hard misshift like that puts alot of stress on everything including the clutch, if the problem continues I would check the pressure plate.
