Default Piston Damage - Detonation

Check out the state of this piston, anyone know what could cause detonation damage like this?

I would say a poor attempt at forced induction would be the most likely cause as I would imagine the engines knock protection wouldn’t allow this to happen on an std. N/A engine.

Any thoughts?

Damn, that is an amazing pic. Looks like there was a handful of nuts bouncing around in there.

Did that come out of the hydrolocked one?!

Usually det can be seen in the corners of the piston top, near the impressions for the valves. That looks like something has been hitting the piston, piece of the spark plug etc.

This is a picture of det that I saw on an engine, the HT lead was bad and was arcing across to the other leads while on a high speed run. That resulted in really bad det damage:

Notice is usually dets badly in one corner, and has a sand blasting effect

tell us more about the setup of the engine and any modifications, condition of the spark plugs, boost or non-boost etc...

Detonation usually breaks the ring lands first or cracks the pistons. It looks more like small particles got in the combustion chamber like someone said a sprk plug tip or even broken turbo debris. From this angle it doesnt even look like a piston meltdown either.

That is what happens when something gets into your cylinder. The s2k piston will not crack a ring land before the rings shatter, so most likley the rings in one of the cylinders shattered and were ejected from the piston. Because of the rapid up and down motion of the piston the ring bits are then shot into the intake manifold and sometimes end up going through multiple cylinders. Either that or you inhaled something into your motor.

How does the head look, and the valves?
The sparkplug?
