I think I've seen more hype about Cold Starts from motor oil manufacturers than I have anything else.

I was thinking of the phrase "Just because I'm paraniod doesn't mean they're not after me..." when I thought about those manufacturers' cold start statements, thinking: "Just because they say it doesn't mean it necessarily isn't true..."

Recently I see the oil idiot light on mine stay lit for a second or so after the car starts; I wonder if increasing the oil pressure prior to starting the car will eliminate this pressure delay and if this might help prevent startup friction and wear, if indeed the latter does occur.

If it truly stays on that long you might consider switching to another filter. That's usually a sign of a filter that has a poor anti-drainback valve. The PureOne comes to mind, as well as the Fram-based Honda filters.

I was just thinking that that might be the cause this morning. Also, the light went off almost immediately this am. Mobil 1 filter.

Thanks for the suggestions on the brands!

I recall just noticing this trait the past few days where it has been quite hot for SoCal 'standards'. Yesterday I turned the S off only after putting the heater and fan on high and waiting for the radiator fan to stop (it was a hard run prior to that time).

I have yet to check the K&N that's on my bench, but they may use a different valve (for some reason). The STP, M1, ACD, K&N, and Bosch all seem to share similar characteristics, though the filter media is radically different. I wouldn't be surprised if the drainbacks are different in some of them.

Also have an ACD, STP OS, Hastings, Super Tech (same as M1, STP, etc.), ACD OS, ST OS... I also picked up some Frams (stock and OS) as they have been recently redesigned. Will post back as to what I find when I get the time to hack them apart.

Meantime... I have had no trouble with the M1's I've been using, the light goes out immediately.
