Default Question: About the Starter.

I had a question, What part does the starter grab onto, and Im not talking about the flywheel, is it called a ring gear? Because my starter has a hard time grabbing onto the flywheel, it spins freely after a few cranks, then maybe 10 seconds later after a few spins, it cranks over. Btw, I just got the starter replaced, so the teeth are fresh. Need help asap !

the starter spins the flywheel which spins the crankshaft. Have you try and spin the crankshaft by hand to see if it spins freely? but you have to loosen the belt first.

did you mess with the tranny recently? maybe the one of the bellhousing bolts, that double as a starter mount bolts, is loose?

sounds like a defective starter.

The ring gear is a steel part and it is pressed on to the cast iron flywheel.

It would be HIGHLY unlikely if the ring gear were to come loose on the flywheel.

I dont thnk anything is loose, Im thinking the ring gear's teeth are worn. Thats why the starters teeth are not catching onto the flywheel. Does that sound right?

Those teeth are pretty hearty. As billman said, the starter is most likely junk. You hear the motor spinning, but not producing enough torque to turn the crank over.

Sounds like the starter is garbage.

It would be highly unlikely for the teeth on the flywheel to be damaged. They are very thick hardened teeth.
