At this point, I'm relatively sure that the timing belt was either stretched some or it was thrown off a tooth or two. Should I go ahead and tear the engine down to inspect my valves and retainers? There isn't any knocking in the engine. I'm planning on replacing the timing belt either way since the car has 75k miles on it.
Our cars have timing chains, not belts.. anyhow, doing a compression test can be risky at this point, you may drop a valve in the process and you may cause more damage! I'm pretty sure your problem will be bent valve/ cracked retainer which isn't as expensive as a new motor. I would just open her up and inspect the head.

Once there, you can either buy aftermarket valves/retainers or settle for AP2 retainers..

As for your chain, many peeps don't replace it but I did, during the overrev it could have stretched by a margin, just playing it safe.

It's a timing "chain" yes, but it's basically a belt with notches, right? Anyhow, I drove the car about 10 miles before making this thread and it still isn't knocking and hasn't gotten worse. Wouldn't you expect it have if it were a cracked retainer or a bent valve? Also, would a bent valve cause random misfire on all cylinders as well as the random multiple cylinder misfire? I would think that would only effect the cylinder with the bent valve.

Take off the valve cover and post up pictures of the intake side valves.

Over revs tend to take out the retainers eventually. When the first one goes the engine goes. What year is your S?

AP2 retainers are stronger and should be substituted for the ones you have now that are suspect.

Uh. I took off the cover. I can't really see the intake side of the valves because of all of the stuff on top my intake manifold. Should I remove all of that stuff for a better look, or would a bent valve be pretty obvious? How do I get a look at my retainers? Do I have to pull the head for that?

The retainers will fit right? I didn't know that they used the same size for the bigger engine.
