Default Reading the dip stick

I've searched and read, but don't feel I have gotten a definite answer. When I remove the dip stick from the car (removing from the front of the car) I noticed one side of the stick has a higher reading then the other. Which reading is correct? This reading was taken when the car was cold. Can anyone give me some insight.

Thanks

I've noticed the same thing. I usually will take a few readings if they are different and if it's still lopsided I just go with the lowest reading. Mine has never been more than 1 "X" different so I don't think it's that significant.

I'd do a search as this topic has been discussed quite a bit, but I think the accurate reading is the side with the less oil marking....

Because the dipstick is in the block and goes through the head, oil drainage causes the higher of the two readings. Therefore, read the lower one. If you let the car sit for long enough, then both sides will be low.
