Rear Output Shaft Bearing Replacement
I just recently purchased a 2005 S2 with 78k miles on it, and I started hearing a whining noise coming from under the center console (tranny). Found out from a reputable mechanic out here in Atlanta (Jeremy at Alan Cox Automotive) that the bearings in the back half of the transmission need to be replaced. There are a few threads on here that talk about how to solve the issue yourself, but none on the cost from a shop. This is a daily driver for me, so I dont have the luxury of figuring out how to replace these myself (not to mention I would have to commandeer a friend's garage) and taking that sort of time. Having this said, has anyone had this job done at a shop and had a good experience with the noise being solved and at a decent price? Alan Cox Auto quoted me at $740 total job cost, but I dont really have any other shop to compare that price to.
Any insight on this would be helpful, thanks everyone.

PS - Isnt there a facebook group for S2 owners in Atlanta? If so, someone please send me an invite for the group so I can join, I appreciate it.

You can actually do it in car if you are skilled:

Normally some AP1's suffer from this problem, BUT It won't give you any issues. I have had that noise for the past 63k miles and have had no trouble. It's just a small whining noise, it won't get any worse. But if you got money to burn, go ahead and replace the bearings. I'm also in ATL, we have Facebook group called S2KGA. Search for it and join. Also blake automotive in Suwannee is another good shop.
click on this link and look at # 13 and 14. I believe those bearings develop hot spots due to no lubrication at some point and start whining. http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...ECONDARY+SHAFT
