Default Rebuild - Bearing Size

S2Ki Team,

I am currently undertaking my first rebuild. Yay! In any case, I have a dilemma. I validated the bearing codes on the crankshaft, block, and connecting rods for my F20C. Unfortunately, the colors of the bearings that were in the engine do not match the colors that manual prescribes.

Before I had looked at this, I had already ordered bearings to match the colors of what was already in the engine. /sigh Now, during reassembly, I've plastigaged the main bearings and gotten the following results:

Spec: 0.017-0.041mm
Service Limit: 0.050

Actual1: 0.038
Actual2: 0.038~0.051
Actual3: 0.038
Actual4: 0.038~0.051
Actual5: 0.038~0.051

This is using Felpro plastigage. Unforuntunately, it can only determine the gap at 0.038 or 0.051 levels. Should I remeasure or is it possible that I have wrong bearing sizes. (Keeping in mind, the engine rebuild was due to detonation issues) The tolerance range is only 24μm. As such, I suspect that the bearings may only be 0.5μm, 1μm, or 2μm different in thickness. In any case, I'm considering using a mic on the journals and finding a 3 point bore gage for journals (or CMM) to get my own estimation of the clearance.

I'll follow up with details on the color codes tomorrow afternoon.
