Default Remove shifter end cap swivel

Can anyone tell me how to remove the 2 hard plastic swivel parts from the shifter? I need to replace the shifter internal boot and these pieces are in the way.
Thanks for any thoughts on this.[attachment=87433:unnamed (1).jpg]

How did you get the new one on? I am wanting to remove both pieces so I can put the small shifter cover on. It looks like it has to go on from the small end. Thanks for the reply

I just gave it a good tap against the wall. Probably better to use a piece of wood or something, it has to be snapped in, forcing it won't work, you could probably tap it on with a rubber mallet. You have to do it in one tap, no beating on it like a drum.

5 min soak in hot water makes them go on and off very easy.
