Default Replacing Cat Converter with Test pipe

Hey Guys,

Hoping someone here can help me out.

I just found out that my catalytic converter is bad on my S2k, and needs to be replaced. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars to replace it, I'm thinking about doing a temporary fix by swapping it out with a test pipe (while keeping the exhaust stock) and had the following questions:

1. Will swapping out my cat with a test pipe cause my check engine light to come on? If so, does that mean my VTEC won't engage anymore? (I had a 97 Prelude back in the day and remembered that when my check engine light appeared, my VTEC wouldn't engage).

2. I've heard that swapping out a test pipe causes the cabin to smell like gas/exhaust fumes...is this true?

3. Will my car sound louder with this set up? (test pipe with stock exhaust)

4. Are there any recommended test pipes I could get without doing any modifications to either the test pipe or exhaust piping?

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks guys!

I did this about 35k miles ago. I'm at 105k now. The cabin does not smell any different. Your tailpipes will get dirty much faster though. The invidia test pipe I bought does not have a CEL fix so its still lit on my dash. I've been telling myself I would take care of for 35k miles now. My vtec hits just fine. My gas mileage as gone up slightly to 28mpg. I'm not prepared to contribute that to the test pipe. My 30%hwy 70% city dosent help though. :-P

Thanks for the info fellas...I realized that the catalytic converters on S2000's are covered under an emissions warranty for 8 years, 80k miles....so I'm just going to the cat replaced for free.

If you want to replace the stock cat, it's guaranteed not to go bad for 8 years I think it is. Let Honda replace it for you first then get a TP if thats what you want.
