Default resetting your check engine

so i was at the dealership and the guy was kinda cool and he told me that i can take the battery cables off the battery and touch the pos and neg CABLES together, hold for about 10 seconds. reinstall and the engine light will be off.

yes it works, i tried it.

my question; is this resetting the ecu or just turning the light off? because the light stays off for about maby 1 week (dont drive this car much) and comes back on. i dont think there is anthing wrong with the car. but i guess imma going to hit up the dealership next week.

obviously something is wrong if you keep throwing a CEL every week......

Definitely go find out what the code is for.

To reset the ECU you should remove the no. 25 "backup" (7.5amp) fuse from the cabin fusebox for 60 seconds. This is the preferred method. I have been told it no longer works on MY06 and up. If you reset your ECU you should do the "Engine Idle Learn Procedure". You can clear DTC's without actually resetting the ECU using a scan-tool. This way there is no need to perform the Idle Learn Procedure.

What you are doing IS most likely resetting the ECU. It would not be just clearing the DTC.

"touch the pos and neg CABLES together, hold for about 10 seconds"-mechanics equivalent to snipe hunting.

I get a cell at least once a month. Every time its the same culprit. The gas cap is loose. Whoever decided to make it illegal to pump your own gas in Jersey is an idiot.
