This doesn't always occur, just randomly. I hear a screeching/scratching sound when starting up my car. It's not high pitched or really loud. No problems or noises after car is started though.

It's intermittent and only heard probably 1 out of every 20 starts. It happens randomly, so I know if I take it to the dealer or mechanic, they probably won't hear it. It seems after the car is warmed up, and I turn it off, start it back up, I won't hear the screech.

Car has 91,000 miles, do you think it's a bad starter or altenator?

Mine does the same thing, sometimes. There are a few threads on it. Look under starter after-run. Mine sounds like I've pressed the Start button After the car is already running It happens randomly in morning start-ups especially in colder temps. I think I'm gonna need a new starter, but don't know when to replace. Hope I'm not damaging flywheel

 

its the starter motor sticking. Just need to pull apart and lube it up. There are a few threads about this.
