Default Second gear grind

Hey guys
whenever i downshift from 3rd to 2nd at a high rpm, say somewhere around 5-6k, it sometimes grinds. however when i downshift from 3rd to 2nd at lower rpms, it does not. i was driving on a mountain pass today and it happened twice, at first i assumed i didnt clutch all the way in so i was cautious the other times i needed second. The next time i downed into second, i hear the grind even with the clutch completely to the ground. im assuming its the second gear syncro, could anyone please give me their take on my situation?

thanks
henry

Damn mine do the exact thing you do. Looks like I need synchro to. Anybody know why the synchro went out fast. If we rev match and heel toe all the time. Wouldn't it save the trany?

Unless you double clutch, the syncros are still used every time you shift. The only time I get a grind with my 01 is when I hit the gate between 2 and 4. I found that holding the shifter more to the left when shifting 1-2 fixed that problem.

Granny shiftin' not double clutchin' like you should. You're lucky that hundred shot of NOS didn't blow the welds on the intake!

5 to 6 K rpm is not considered "high". If it were your 2nd gear syncros, you would grind shifting into 2nd from 1st as much as you grind from 3rd to 2nd. I'm going to bet that when you downshift in the manner that you do, you are in a bigger hurry than if you were to do it at much lower rpms. I'm going say that it's very likely that you are "cutting the corner" when you move the stick from 3rd to 2nd. You are not placing the shifter exactly where it needs to be to hit 2nd dead on. You are problably "clipping" the shift piece and shift fork for 4th. It's like telling you to walk head on into the end of a dividing wall. You can't go left and right at the same time without slicing yourself in half.

So what you are saying is not to downshift by going angling straight down rather then 3rd then move the shifter left then 2nd. As far as the grind you think I would need to replace the syncros? Thanks.

Taking the "diagonal" is the "short cut" that will increase the chances of grinding. If done carefully, no big deal, but usually taking short cuts increases sloppiness.

Replacing the syncros ........................ You didn't read what I posted .................
Please read it again .............................
If it were your 2nd gear syncros, you would grind shifting into 2nd from 1st as much as you grind from 3rd to 2nd.
