Default Second Gear Popping Out

I have my second gear popping out every so often. Usually when I think it's in gear when it's not, even though I feel like it's in all the way. So I've been making sure I put more force when putting it into second than the other gears, which works for now. I occasionally get a crunchy third gear gear as well (though I think this can be from the temperature of the transmission fluid).

Leaky clutch master cylinder had been fixed this year, and transmission fluid was replaced with Redline MTF.

Before proceeding with the DIY for re-greasing the shifter, is there anything else that may help the issue? Anything with the shifter fork?

Thanks,
Brian

Looks like the previous owner(s) had too much fun bangin' the 2nd gear syncrhros. Good luck, lol.

Number of shifters greased in 14 years of working on S2000s: 0

Your car likely needs a second gear set (the gear collar teeth and corresponding engagement teeth on second gear are rounded off)

What about the occasional crunch in some gears?
Same issue?

Hi Billman,

My 2004 AP2 has a similar problem with the 2nd gear pop out but only when cold during the first 10-15 minutes of driving. It happens as soon as I let go of the clutch when I put it into second. It's as if it didn't go in at all. It does not pop out of gear otherwise during deceleration or acceleration, although the shift knob does vibrate a little bit. I have changed the mtf fluid with OEM honda fluid and I am going to replace the clutch master cylinder. The car only has 53k miles. Any suggestions? Thank you!

How much free play is there in the rod to MC? I adjusted all the free play out of mine and that made my 2nd gear notchy-ness when cold disappear.

I had an 1992 Acura Legend that did that (popped out of 4th) --- dealer put in a good transmission under warranty.

I tried gear oil change. Didn't work.

Good luck with your transmission!

Before you spend so much money, try something very simple and inexpensive first, Amsoil MTF Synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid

Here are the two threads I posted about it and you can see how many people this has helped over the years. There's some tips on attempting to also 'rework' the synchro with the new fluid. My 2nd gear pop out was very, very bad, and after these fixes it's now 40k miles without a single one since.

^ when you row up and down thru the gears at different temperatures, do you mean with the car on and sitting still or do you mean to go up and down the gears as much as possible while driving?
