Default Setting up the Timing Chain

I searched the forums for this but couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for.

I'm assembling my motor (stock F20C1) and I did mark the chain with paint before taking off, but I put my crank and stuff in a different block and noticed there is a different color link on the chain on one end and then two colored links right next to eachother.

My question is where do these colored links line up to. Meaning, does the single colored link go on the crank end and the two colored links on the cam end? What do i line the gears up to?

Basically, how do I set up the timing on the timing chain? Any help or guidance appreciated!

It's also described in the Helms manual. If you're tearing apart engines, I'd be surprised if you don't have one.

Neither of them is realy a big deal. Them move as the motor runs. The gears ARE a big deal.

But for the record, the two colored links goes on the upper gear and the single colored link goes on the crank gear. There are round marks on the gears.

Doesn't matter were they are as long as the actual timing marks are aligned correctly.

Yeah that is true which applies to most timing chains. I just wanted to be sure because I never have done one of these motors. I just finished assembling it today, its ready to put in the car. It was pretty straight-forward like most motors: all i used were the torque specs and of course the question about the timing chain. Other than that its all about cleanliness, cleanliness, and cleanliness. Oh and assembly lube of course.

Thanks for the help on the timing chain though. I put the crank mark facing straight down since the chain only wraps the bottom half of the gear. Then lined up the cam gear on the top (slightly to the right) since theres two lines that line up with the top surface of the head. And put the cams in with the marks facing eachother which is where I marked them when I took it apart, labeling them intake and exhaust. I'm gonna put the motor in tonite and im gonna start it up tomorrow hopefully. Should fire right up. Ill let you know what happens.

Thanks again for the help guys!

Update: Engine runs great. Thanks s2ki.com
