if you where only ~ 10 mph over (ish) for second gear. trusting what you said about shifting early in 3rd, you probably did not hit over the 9K ish mark.

several people on this board had AP2 engines with an AP1 ecu that has been remapped.

TBH, as long as you did not let the clutch fully out, or got to it very quickly, you wont have dont any damage.

i would still advise getting your valves and retainers checked, and it is easy enough to do yourself.

$40 for a compression test? Just buy your own gauge and do it yourself. Unplug/remove the fuse of your fuel pump, remove your spark plug and screw in the tester. Crank. Read.

There, done.

A compression test will clue you in to a bent valve if you already have one. But even if your car passes that test with flying colors, don't make the mistake of thinking that everything's fine.

A compression test will not tell you anything about cracked valve retainers. In fact, NO test other than taking the valve cover off and looking at them carefully will tell you if they're cracked.

In fact, just looking at the tops of them won't tell you if the cracks are starting at the bottom where the stress is.

Get your retainers checked by an experienced mechanic. Preferably one that knows S2000s. If you're in doubt at all, get them replaced.

When ever you mechanical overrev the fuel does get cut off, but it does not matter. What matters is the speed you are traveling at when you misshift. If the fuel wasn't cut off, and you were pressing the gas you could rev higher, which you cannot do.

If the car runs fine, compression test will show nothing.

If any valve is bent, it is obviously at the .00X level because the engine idles fine. A leakdown test is the only way the find valve damage at this level. (IMO your valves are fine)

The ONLY way to check retainers is to pull the cover and look for recessed keepers. all you need to pull is the valve cover to see this. The running condition will not change, even if the retainer is severely broken and the retainer is hitting the roller. It won't even make the slightest noise.

The existence of a fuel cut off doesn't apply to a mechanical over-rev, if you did indeed engage the clutch fully after putting the shifter into 2nd when you were at the redline in 3rd, you were doing about 50-60kmh 'more than the engine can do when in 2nd gear', even if the fuel did cut off, which it probably did (a fuel cut-off does indeed exist), it doesn't matter at that point.

The car is moving at a given speed and the transmission is engaged.

Keep in mind the car doesn't have to throw a CEL for there to be anything wrong with the engine. You're doing the right thing by having it checked as soon as possible, before anything that might have happened develops into something catastrophic.

Good luck.

PS: might want to lay off pushing the car hard until you get it checked, or at least I know I would.
that about sums it up

The car may be okay but latent damage may be there.

--Have a full and close inspection of your retainers and seats done.
--Have a compression test done
--Have a leak-down test done while you are at it

Spending a couple of hundred bucks on insurance that you are okay is prudent.
