shifter feels like gears are still engaged

yes, but this is different... clutch pedal is on the floor, pull shifter out of 2nd... feels like i never touched the clutch pedal. but, eventually when the car gets to a complete stop, i can shift out with no resistance.
does your engagement point feel like its LOW to the ground?
