Default Side Mirror Cover Removal

Hey everyone,
i was wondering if it were possible to just remove the outer part of my side mirrors?

One on the left have alot of scratches on it, but not to deep so i figure i can paint it but im not doing it on the car. Or buy one of the cover's floating around ebay for 25 bucks even if they dont look good it might an alternative.

just checked the factory shop manual--they show the mirror coming off in one piece---remove the inner door panel and unplug the mirror electrical connection and remove 3 nuts and it comes right off---you'd then have to mask off the lower section if you want to just paint the upper part.
not perfect but at least you can paint it off the car

hope this helps
