Side Pipes
Was discussing with my son what exhaust to buy, and he asked me why nobody made side pipes? It's probably quite impractical, but it would be super-cool to have this done. If this is even possible, who would be the condidates to build this exhaust system? Ideas anyone?

If you've seen what's inside a Viper side pipe you'd know that it would be difficult and impractical for the S2000. In order get enough "muffling", there has to be decent size cannisters. That being said, you would have 2 places to run these pipes. First would be directly out from the side of the car and this would make it a large step over. Imagine how many burnt legs you'd get. It would also ruin the side contours of the car. The other would be to run it under the car and this would eliminate any useful ground clearance we may already have. Also this would make jacking up the car more difficult. Side pipes look better on "muscle" cars. I don't see the S2000 as a "muscle" car.

A side pipe system would be useful in freeing up the rear undersection for aero improvements. It would probably be lighter than other systems as well since it would be shorter.
Nothing wrong with a side pipe system, except that it would only exit on one side (no reason for a dual side exit on an I4 engine). Wouldn't be hard to fab, but clearance might be an issue.

Depends on how you do it. There's enough room in the current "tunnel" to fit all your muffling in place (a couple of tube mufflers in series). After that, you could run a pipe to the side just in front of the rear wheel. Wouldn't be any lower than the strakes, and in fact you could flatten the pipe out (kind of like a, gulp, old NASCAR exit) to improve clearance.
