Default Slipping Transmission - Advice Needed

Hello,

My friend has a '94 Accord with a 4spd automatic and is experiencing issues that have us concerned. He needs to know how much is involved to make an informed decsion to either keep the car and have it fixed or get another one. The car has 141K miles. He will be changing the fluid asap in hopes of numbing the issues, but I doubt it. He will be taking it to our local Honda dealer, whom I know the master tech, but wanted to get various opinions here as well.

Symptoms
--hunting for gears during downshift
--slipping of any gear (i.e. during climbing of hills and moderate acceleration, transmission gets out of gear and revs as if it were in neutral)

If someone can provide data in the below format, that would be most helpful. I understand this is virtual so just looking for all the possibilities.
Data Needed
--Potential Causes
--Diagnosis Process
--Worst/Best Case Scenario with parts/prices
--Steps for resolution, temporary and absolute

Thanks in advance for your technical expertise.

you can find used automatic transmissions for cheap at local junkyards. try to find any automatic tranny from a 94-97 accord(they all fit) and you're good to go. i wouldn't even bother fixing it. btw, i believe the torque convertor is causing those symptoms.

the clutch packs in his auto tranny are worn out. he'll need a rebuild. it would be cheaper to buy the helm manual for the accord and go toa junkyard and buy a used tranny though. and have him change the tranny fluid every 15k miles on it. there is no fluid filter on honda automatic tranny's so you have all this metal debris floating in there all the time.
