Default Soft top removal...

I was thinking of springing for the seibon CF top. But even quality CF is still weight if nothing comes off to compliment it. So... I was wondering where I could find out how to remove my soft top, motors and all, and how much weight I might save. As much as I love it it just sounds heavy everytime I roll that top back.

Maybe this is sacrelige but I would also be interested if there was a manual soft top available. I really like the manual top in the MR2 spyder. Seems minimalistic and clean.

Launch tomatoes this direction...

Thanks

It's only 60lbs of weight savings with all the stuff you want to get rid of.

It's fairly easy to take out the soft top assembly, the most difficult part is to separate and part out the plastic interior from the rear. Once you get the platic liner out, the soft top frame and the associated pivot frame and motors are easy to bolt out.

You'll have to re-use the motor mounting brackets because the rear hard top mounts bolt to those brackets. You won't save all 60lbs because those are some heavy duty brackets with some considerable weight to them. My guess is that each one is about 8lbs.....I can't remember.

ONLY 60 LBS???? That's a lot of weight.

I'm with you, Tyraid, only I can't justify spending 3500 bucks on a CF Hard Top. Seems pretty insane that a single piece of formed material would cost 1/2 as much as, say, a ZX-6R.

Overall, you're probably looking at shaving off 15-20lbs by removing the soft top and going w/HT. May as well just gut your interior (I did) as the only thing more difficult than removing all the plastic crap is trying to put it all back together.

60 lbs? That's a ton to me. and the location of where that weight is, it's higher up in the car than most anything else (the worst place). I pick cookie crumbs out of my cup holder and NOT because I'm cleaning my car.

I think I'll have at it as soon as I can secure my hard top. I'll also need to pay more attention to the weather if I'm going to go topless in the future.

Any diagrams for getting this stuff out? I'd like to know what I'm getting into.

doesn't stripping the car mess up the balance?

your best bet is to check the service manual. id post the pages but i dont want to get in trouble
