Default Solution for 2nd to 3rd grind

MY 01 grinds from 2nd to third at all temps, and speeds, unless i double clutch. my main guess is that its a syncro, from hard shifting (car used to be boosted). I recently changed fluids, still nothing. What are my options on fixing besides swapping the entire tranny? replace single synchro with the ap1 brass that will most likely break again? I dont think the ap2 carbon synchros will fit with ap1 gears... please show me some options. thanks guys.

Parts cost for the 3rd gear gearset and all the associated bearings that you will want to replace 'while you are in there' will add up to more than the cost of a good, used AP1 transmission. If it were me, I'd pickup a used transmission for $450-550 and swap it in. You could also go to an AP2 transmission, but those are more expensive -- in the $900 ballpark, generally.

does swapping to an ap2 effect the rpm range? i heard the first couple gears are shorter, and the last two are longer? is the ap2 tranny stronger?

The solution is an AP2 tranny, its a direct bolt up and rpms will be slightly different

gears 1-4 are shorter and 5-6 are taller, so you will rev alittle lower in cruising gears.

You could try GM syncromesh. I have put that is some b series trannys that helped them shift a lot smoother. Would be worth a try its very inexpensive

There's a couple threads in the FS section with both AP1 and AP2 tranny's for sale.

Holinger Sequential is also an option if we're talking about changing the whole thing out.

The ap2 tranny is no stronger than the ap1 variant . It is however a little more forgiving . The synchros in the ap2 box are carbon coated brass units . They are no stronger than the non coated synchros . I run an ap2 box in my ap1 and i like it . It does offer slightly better gearing along with improved performance . One must swap out the companion flange to make the swap possible .
