some scrapy grindy noises from rear
About a month ago I started hearing a light sraping/grinding/creaking kind of noise from the rear of the car. Only under neutral throttle, any load and the noise disappeared. The noise would also go away under cornering load. Typically doesn't start making the noise until the car's warmed up a bit.
Also I've recently noticed a slight clunkiness under near-neutral throttle, between load/unload.
I've got the back of the car up in the air here at work, and after some wiggling around of various parts, I think I've found the problem. Applying up/down force at the inboard CV joint, the diff output flanges appear to have a small amount of wiggle and uppie/downie play. Not a huge amount, but definitely visible. Seems to me the flanges should only have a small amount if innie/outie motion.
Am I in for a diff rebuild?
Known history: I bought the car (an '01) last Feb with 39k miles. Now at 52k miles, and with ~10 track days over the course of this year.
Whaddyall think?
