Definitely search and consider the sources (as always). If you're not finding anything then use a site-restricted Google search. For this particular topic, try adding "Woodwork" to your keywords.

1. I was one who had skip shifted all my life, but I stopped doing it after I read about not doing it years ago on another S2 site, with xviper giving me the heads up.
2. I try to be a good boy now, slipping up only occasionally.
3. I now try to "row" through the gear I'm skipping, but it sounds like even that is not the best, so now I will try to let the clutch out the slightest so those synchros think I'm doing right by them.

If you move the shifter through the gear, the 2nd gear syncro is going to do some work to slow down the shaft from 7,000 to 4,500 first, then the 3rd gear syncro only has to slow it down from 4,500 to 3,250.

So: not moving through the gears = 3rd gear syncro has to deal with a speed delta of 3,750 rpm.
Moving through the gears: 3rd gear syncro has to deal with a speed delta of 1,250 rpm.

What is going to be easier on the syncro?
never knew skip shifting was bad and why it was bad... until now.

thanks!

transmissions, the universe and everything...geez you guys write good articles.. made me get a new master cylinder... keep reading this over the last few days...

the transmission does.. exactly what it's simple yet complicated name implies.. it transmits... it takes the power of the gods and transmits it to mother nature.. and all lives well in the universe, if, as a deity that we are, we change that flow of energy, someone somewhere is gonna suffer, usually the syncros.. hasn't changed / doesn't matter what gearbox...

this whirling torrent gets spun up to speed an then, odd as it sounds, it expects to gear up to the next level so it can achieve nirvana.. if you toss it in say 3rd, from 1st and though you idle lightly to lessen the suffering the innocent pays for your crimes...

executions begin when you go the opposite direction, like going to 4th an hit 2nd, or from 4th an hit 3rd.. self explanatory... game over..... you'll need more then quarters, get a broom and a dust pan

strangely enough it isn't designed for you to decide how it's suppose to function... that's why they invented automatics

Rowing the gear box slows the input shaft incrementally just as you would drive the car, and does NOT hurt the trans

Example: redline first, clutch in, shift 2-3-4, release clutch.

Rowing is the SAFE way to skip gears, as far as mechanicals are concerned.

I regularly row after getting on the freeway....wind out 3rd, row 4-5-6. Been doing it for 120k, and assure you it is safe for the trans.

I have never desired to skip shift in a car. When I get that lazy, I'll buy an automatic.

Thanks for the testimony billman! Whats your opinion on skiping a gear on a downshift? Say 60mph in 6 to 4 to get off the highway? I dont see how you are helping the trans by rowing without engaging the engine to the trans. Maybe ill crack open my manual trans textbook again but it just doesnt make sense to me lol.

1. Not lazy: efficient; if you are already at speed, and don't need to accelerate more, putting the car into a "cruising speed" would necessitate skipping a gear.
2. I don't need to use 3rd gear when I'm already going 50 mph in 2nd, I could actually skip 3rd and 4th, b/c 5th gear and 50 mph does well.
3. But, I don't, now that I'm "educated." I have been warned about the perils, and I will heed the warning!
