Default Spring compressor needed when replacing springs?

I'm replacing the OE springs on my MY02 this weekend. I recall a post a while back that a compressor isn't needed when lowering an S. Can anyone confirm this for me? Also, when swinging the lower arm out of the way to remove the spring/shock assembly, is it possible or preferable to unbolt the arm by removing the two inner pivot bolts rather than popping the ball joint? Any info/suggestions much appreciated from anyone who's been there done that!
