I think my problem was either vacuum related or in the Charcoal canister system either in vacuum or in electronics. Never got around to fixing it.

I know I'm bumping a horribly old thread, but I have an 01 running 12psi on a vortech setup and my car is jerking so badly it's almost undrivable.

I'm gonna try the test to see if the IAC is bad but for one thing; I don't even know where the evap canister purge valve is or what it looks like.

Could someone point me to what it is?

Thanks!

Nate

wow it's been 3 years and mine is still not fixed! i just replaced the PCV valve though ($12. generic) and it's idling a lot better. still rough though. here's an updated list of what i trouble shooted.

Replaced, then cleaned IAC multiple times
cleaned TB
Replaced Map Sensor
New spark plugs
Sent out injectors for ultra sonic cleaning
new vacuum lines
new fuel pressure regulator
cleaned out map sensor hole with WD40
new CAI Air Filter
Valve adjustment

Will this battle NEVER END!? anyway i'd have to say after doing all of the above i would always feel the car idle a little smoother, but it's surely not "fixed", the car still idle's pretty rough and hiccups with acceleration.

I never replaced the Evap canister or coil packs, although i plan to switch out those parts from my roommate's S2000 for a bit as he never drives his anyway and doesn't care.

Mine has started doing the lean on tip in thing and stumbling when pulling away from a stop or very slow parking lot speeds. Has anyone figured anything out?

01 with K&N intake, light flywheel, and no air pump. 166,000 miles

Since it's already been bumped...I too am having a similar issue.

'01 AP1 w/ 74, xxx miles. Rough/low sputtering idle, otherwise, the car drives fine - no stalling, no hesitation, no bucking, no CEL.

It's gradually been getting more frequent over the last couple of days. I wouldn't say it's been getting WORSE, since the condition hasn't changed. It just sputters a lot at idle. My RPM have always dipped well below idle after a rev, causing the car to shudder, but this is a new phenomenon that seems related.

Things I've tried without any changes:

MAP Whack
Cleaned IACV
New MAP Sensor (returned it)
New spark plugs (Bosch Platinum +4, removed and saved for 100k change)
New coil pack (early AP2 coil, tested in every cylinder and then returned)
Valve Adjustment

I think I remember reading somewhere that if the car dies at idle when you cover the two holes in the throttle body (mine does), it means your IACV is bad. I'm thinking about taking it apart and doing the thorough cleaning described by Billman, but I'm not sure if that's a cure for my particular issue. So far the only two solutions I haven't tried are

1) Cleaning the small passage in the throttle body to the MAP sensor
2) taking apart the IACV and cleaning it entirely

I started having these problems after I got another engine. (the car stood outside all winter with the head of the old engine off, fuel lines were open and so were all intake related connections)
In the beginning it wouldn't idle, it would die time after time again.
A couple of thousand km's later now, it will actually idle. I've also added an injector cleaner to the fuel tank.

My other problems are still present though.

- vibration at idle
- Low rpm and low throttle jerkiness/hesitation. WOT or +3000rpm no problem.
- rumble(popping) in the exhaust for a minute or so at cold start
- you can sometimes slightly feel a hesitation when cruising
- trying to keep the revs constant at say 2500rpm and they will start to drop a bit on their own
- Occasional P0170 and P0172 CEL (system too rich, bank 1)

Allready checked/done:

- oil change
- new plugs (correct NGK's)
- new airfilter
- switched the entire throttle body over with a known good throttlebody (including MAP and TPS)
- Valve clearances checked
- checked for vacuum leaks
- compression tested
- cleaned IACV (wasn't that dirty)
- added injector cleaner (seemed to help a little)
- block those 2 holes in the throttle body -> engine dies (this one seems very related to everyone in this thread!!)

It doesn't seem to improve with time, nor does it worsen.
The car is very driveable, it's just annoying to know your once so smooth engine is now a nightmare in slow traffic and idles rough.

I also made these movies a while back:

Trying to keep the revs constant without moving my foot, but you can still see the revs drop on their own. (the big drops is me letting go of the throttle ofcourse)

Notice how rough/uneven the exhaust sounds (does have a testpipe):

Tricking the engine to stall:

Fortunately, I can't reproduce the stalling anymore.
