Default SRS DTC code 1-1 help?

My SRS light is on and the code is 1-1
I've reset it multiple times. Each time it stays off for 2 days and then returns with the same code.

DTC 1-1 - open in driver's airbag inflator

Anyone know what this means? How expensive is this going to be? Can I do it myself? If I don't fix it will my airbag still work?

Thanks,
JASON

Most of the time this is a wiring problem I expect. There's a thing called a "cable reel" in the steering column the winds and unwinds as you turn the wheel. It gives power to the airbag. If it breaks, the airbag can't be inflated and you get a code. Also commonly, the horn stops working.

There's a procedure in the manual, page 23-24.

It might be wiring closer to the SRS controller but, I'd start here. Keep in mind, the airbag's like a shotgun shell. It can kill you if your face is too close when it goes off. You probably want to pay someone to fix this.

The stealership checked this out and it turns out the SRS unit is bad...the main ecu behind the stereo. They want $1000 to fix it. I just bought one out of a wreck today for $100.

Hopefully changing it out will make the srs light go out.

I finally got my car back today from the stealership and installed the new SRS ECU. it works! no more SRS light and I saved myself $900. It only took about 45 min to install.

Don't buy the line about the SRS system being to dangerous to work on. There's only about 4 parts. Just follow the directions, disconnect the battery before you start, and there's not a problem.

Also, the stealership told me a used SRS ECU would never work because in any accident, even if the bags aren't deployed, it gets triggered and is useless. This just isn't true. Looking at the shop manual, there's one switch that triggers both bags and both seat belt tensioners....it's all or nothing. If you need an SRS controller, just find one out of a wreck where the bags didn't deploy and it should be good.

The key is finding a used controller where the bags didn't deploy. If the bags ever deploy the unit is a paperweight.

Is there a way to tell from the ECU whether it's dead or not? What mechanism makes it one-use? The airbag and the airbag exploder thingie makes sense...

The impact sensors inside the unit make it 1 use only.

There's no way to tell by looking at it--it's just a small sealed metal box. If you can look at the car it'd be obvious if the bags were blown. Otherwise I guess you'd just have to trust the guy selling it.

The stealership told me in any accident the seat belt tensioners go off even if the bags don't deploy. From what I read in the shop manual, that just isn't possible. If the sensors are triggered, both the bags and the belts deploy. no way there can be just one or the other.

Slows2K, can you verify that's true?

Honda doesn't break down bag deployment threshold information. I have seen car with deployed belts and not deployed bags. (not uncommon) It all depends on the force direction the wreck occurs. If you are rear ended the tensioners will deploy to hold you in the seat, but the bags may not deploy.

I have a 1-1 code on MY03. I took the steering wheel off a week ago to put a new leather cover on it that needed to be stitched over the steering wheel. Ever since I have had the SRS lights. I have reset the yellow clip underneath like 3 times and I get the two blinking lights that tell me I did it right but the SRS comes back on. I took the airbag out again and looked at the airbag contacts and everything looks okay. Does anyone know why the light would come on only after removing the airbag? The car has not been wrecked. Original airbags. I can't figure out what the problem is. Any help would be really appreciated!
