I sent a sound clip to billman and he confimed that my car was making the same noise as his. I ordered a new tensioner from hardtopguy this morning and plan to swap it as soon as it gets here.

Highlander, if we get a chance, can you listen to mine this weekend? I'm not real concerned, just curious.

I replaced the cam chain tensioner tonight and it seems to have done the trick. No more chattering while at idle, and not a peep at startup.

Billman, you rock!!! Thanks for your help!

Oh, and the folks at Hardtopguy rock, too!!! Ordered the part Monday morning, shipped Monday evening, got here today!

Billman...if you recall...I had this same issue with my S2000. And you were quite helpful in detecting the issue. The Honda dealer replaced my belt and pulley, stating that was the issue.

The noise went away...for about a week...

Then it came back and was the *same* exact noise...not louder or longer, the exact same.

I took it back and they looked it over some more...

Then they decided the starter was the culprit. They replaced it and the noise is gone. It has never done it since.

I was just wondering if there is a DIY for changing this...

Very randomly.. like once out of every 10 startups... I would have this kind of grinding/rrrrrrrrraaaappp sound for a second. Then its normal...

The closest thing i've ever found on this is this.. so figured I'd try to change it out..

Removal is in the Helms manual on page 6-29 and 6-30, steps 23-26. If the tensioner is bad and being replaced, only step 26 is required

Reinstallation is on page 6-48, steps 21-23 (for a new tensioner), or 18-23 (for reinstallation of the old tensioner)

If you are replacing the tensioner with a new one, here are the relevant sections of the manual:

Remove the 2 bolts that secure the tensioner to the block, then remove the tensioner

lube the o-rings with a dab of oil, then insert and replace the bolts. Make sure the bent portion of the retaining pin on the tensioner faces the front of the block.

remove the maint. bolt from the front of the block, then reach through the hole with a pair of needle-nose pliers and remove the retaining pin from the tensioner. Then replace the maint. bolt.
