The limiter is not mechanically manipulated by oil pressure/viscosity or the VTEC solenoid. The ECU turns off fuel and/or spark at about 6k RPM until the COOLANT temp exceeds a certain value. VTEC has always been related to coolant temp. In older cars...VTEC just won't engage, but the ECU will allow the engine to rev to its normal limiter (B/D/H series cars, for example). In the S2000, the ECU limits the RPM as well as VTEC engagement.

OP...don't rev your car out when its cold. Whats the matter you?

As I have learned so far the limiter works as designed and doesn't hurt the car when it engages that's the reason it's there. Thanks for all the help though

Revving the car to 6k (100 cycles per second) will definitely do damage if it isn't properly warmed up first. The limter is there to say "wtf were you thinking?!". They couldn't very well limit it to 3k or lower for obvious reasons.

I wouldn't exceed 3-4k RPM until the engine has reached operating temp.

You should also allow an extra 6-8 minutes or ~10 miles for the oil to reach 190 degrees or higher, as it doesn't flow well below operating temp.

I bet it was more of a warranty claim prevention method.. Bonus of being a safeguard afterward.

^ The oil flow needed in VTEC at 8k-9k is huge, Honda knows that cold oil won't flow nearly as well and thus put in a safety mechanism, definitely to reduce warranty claims but failures in general.

Just to complete the thought on how to properly warm-up an engine --- it's not good to lug or load the engine too much at low RPM's either. Esp when oil is cold. In my '07, with normal city driving, it takes about 10 minutes to warm from stone cold. With outside temp 50-70°F. 5W-30 oil.

you shouldnt be reving out a cold motor......
Yea this is really bad... not many people would buy your car if you ever go to sell, knowing this

Why would you even consider reving a motor to redline til it's warmed up? Are you new to driving?
