Straight Pipe
So I just got my straight pipe. I installed it a couple days ago. I noticed an increase in noise right off the bat. It is much louder, escpecially coupled with the Spugen exhaust. I also noticed an increase in HP mostly at the mid and high end. The only down side that I can see is the smell. My exhaust now smells like an outboard boat. But I can deal with that. Plus $200, for most likely 5-10 HP. Good deal to me.

I noticed the same things over the last two weeks of having my test pipe installed. Personally, I miss the bottom end grunt. The noise isn't just loud, it's deafening. I found myself not revving as high simply because I didn't want to attract any extra attention. Don't forget the benefit of 10 lbs. weight reduction. I put the cat back and my ears are grateful
Yeah I used to shift at about 5000-6000 around town, but now with the intake, exhaust and straight pipe, I am shifting at about 3500-4000. I see that you are from CA also, so you had to be "quiet" around cops, so they dont bust you with a fix-it ticket for the CAT. Sucks.

Exactly. Last thing you need is to get stopped for noise and not pass the visual inspection. Overall in my case, the HP gains and risk/reward isn't worth the headache. Might be interesting to compare the increase in noise with one of the 'quieter' exhausts like the Mugen or OEM. I forgot to mention that shifting takes less clutch effort-no idea why. The fuel efficiency is about the same if not a little worse. I'll keep mine on the shelf for now.

I think vanaron is probably referring to the combined HP from exhaust and pipe. I could see more HP from increased flow if the car was FI. speeeding actually lost power on the dyno with the test pipe on his NA car.
I was told the rule of thumb is if you feel it, it is at least 5 HP. It could also be just that it gets through the RPMS a little faster. I am thinking about having a valve that goes from 1 side of the exhaust to the other, and have one be with the straight pipe, and one that will go through a cat. I would be placing the cat, right after the split. I have measured and it would fit. Therefore, when switched, it would be still going thru the straight pipe, but then it would have to go thru the cat. I have seen the hardware for this setup. I am sure that it would be less HP than even stock, but if it means that the cops can't do anything then it is worth it to me. Otherwise, I will have to become friends with the Sherriff S2000 owner in the group.
