I live in the south, so I haven't experienced any cold weather yet. It usually doesn't get very cold here in La. I got my pump in a STA-LUBE rear diff. package about 7 or 8 years ago. I can't remember where I got it though. I only bought 2 qts. of RL because the manual states 1.7 or 1.8qts.- something like that. I went with RL because everything I have read about it has been positive. Plus it was only $7.85/qt. at a local speed shop. I used a 1/2" drive with a 17mm socket for the fill and a 3/8" ratchet for the drain. Plus I used a jack so I could get under the car enough to reach the plugs. Hope this helps!!!!

Hmmm... Are you saying that the car wasnt level when you did the fluid change?

I don't believe I said that in any of my post's. I've been working on cars for about 20+ years-I'm sure I did it correctly.

par5000,

You didn't have to exactly say it was not level. You did say you used a jack so I thought the same thing as davepk when I read that

Allright, let me be more clear on this.

1. I raised vehicle slightly on drivers side. I removed fill plug then drain plug.
2. I lowered car to drain.
3. I raised car installed drain plug and filled with 2qts. of MTF.
4. I lowered car, let excess drain out of fill hole.
5. I raised car installed fill plug.
6. I lowered car and the job was complete.

It sounds like a pain in the butt and it kinda was, but I know the job got done right.

Don't want to seem nitpicky but should you not have lowered the car back to level with the fill plug out and let the excess drain out? That's the level the fluid should be at, right? (Fill it till it flows out of the fill hole when level?)
OK, nevermind, I see you just edited your post.

I found the pump if anyone is interested. It's at NAPA. I hope the link works. http://www.napaonline.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...35&prmenbr=5806

re-post of my two cents:

You don't have to measure how much fluid you put in. After draining, just fill it back up while it's jacked up on the left front. Just keep filling (I used almost two quarts doing this) until it starts to run out. Let the car down and let the rest drain out. When it's finished draining, you're done. Jack it back up and put the fill bolt back on (with a new washer). The correct 'fill point' is level with the fill hole (i.e., nothing is spilling out when it's on level ground). I think it was 1.6qts? Just read the manual (RTFM) in the section on 'Capacities', which I think is page 194 off the top of my head. Use a 17mm socket for the fill bolt and just a 3/4" socket wrench for the drain bolt. I don't recall any torque settings in the manual for either bolt, it just says 'tighten securely'.

another re-post of my two cents (or: stealing xviper's patented invention):

For anyone thinking of doing this in the near future. Go to the store (Pep Boys?) and get one of those screw on things that fit an empty plastic 16oz Coke bottle. It has a foot long hose and a shut off valve and all you need to do is fill it with the MTF, close the valve, get under the car, stick the hose in the fill hole, open the valve and squeeze until you need to refill the bottle. I changed my tranny fluid to Synchromesh like this with the car jacked up on a stand (RF tire) in less than 30 minutes. Piece of cake.

add'l info:

Tranny FILL plug (upper): 44 N-m / 33 ft-lbs
Tranny DRAIN plug (lower): 39 N-m / 29 ft-lbs

I know this in not rocket science but this is what I plan to do.. your feedback is welcomed :-)

1. I'm using ramps - so the front end will be completely up
2. remove the fill cap
3. remove the drain cap
4. drain existing tranny fluid out with use of the pump
5. put the drain cap on but part way (to see how fill is fill)
6. Re-fill with gm synchromesh with use of the pump
7. lower the car

that should do it I hope ?

thanks again
