Default symptoms of bad piston rings?

Hey there
Im making a guess with this but im guessing im in need of new piston rings as my car burns a sh1t load of oil (2litres + in 1000miles) and leaves a trail of smoke while in 1st gear wot-ing and has this petrol/oil burning smell when im not moving. just wondering what other symptoms should i like out for before deciding if i need new rings or not? my car is near its 2nd major service.
cheers

Could also be valve seals.

Clasic ring symptom is more smoke when you left off the gas (while still in gear, foot off clutch). This creates a sort of suction that pulls more oil up past the rings, if they are bad.

Classic valve seal symptom is more smoke when you first start up after its been sitting. Sitting allows oil to drip into combustion chambers, so when you fire up there is a bunch of oil to burn off.

Is the oil foamy? What about the coolant? Oil/water mixing casues foam. Foam would mean head gasket or maybe cracked head.

Compression test, leakdown?

Bad rings would result in smoke all the time. Most of the smoke at idle and decel is valve seals. Do the above first and get back to us.

well i only get smoke while woting on 1st gear, like hard acceleration only when the revs climb real fast, it used to smoke abit idling but its seems to have dissappeared when i moved to thicker oil. Theres a burning oil smell from the back and eats through my engine oil quick. topped up 3-4 quarts in around 2000miles. im going to have a compression test to see where i should head with this.

Aren't there some conditioners that can be used to repair the rings?

Ok
changing to 10~40w seems to have stoped the car from smoking when wot-ing compared to the oem honda feo stuff(10_30w). the burning oil/fuel smell is still here
I dunno how the oil consumption is going to be though.
