Changing the tensioner on a worn ( therefore longer) chain only helps mask the problem. When a chain stretches the distance between the links increases by the tiniest amount and it starts to catch as it exits the crank pulley exaggerating slapping on the slack side of the chain.
So you're saying it is the chain itself making "the noise" regardless of the tension?

As far as I know it is the oil pressure & flow (and nothing else) that's producing the force to keep tension on the chain (running engine..)
The worm is like a limited slip ty-rap: in general it only allows the piston to move out so it keeps the piston from moving in when the oil pressure drops, during shifts for example.
But during warm-up and a changing load on the chain it can move in because of the oil film between worm and piston.

From my experience, a worn chain sets up a chattering noise. Changing to a new tensioner reduces the noise slightly, also fitting a new chain and the sprocket on the crank greatly reduces the amount of the piston stickout on the tensioner and also results in a quiet chain.

Are there IYO (In Your Opinion) any downsides to not doing anything about this chattering noise?
Is it like clutch buzz: Its a noise but harmless?

I do remember from my dirt bike days (as a hobby yeeeeears back) that when the chain was too tight it also made a clacking / ticking noise.
Those chains were never that clean though, being out in the open.

The chain is unlikely to break or jump a sprocket.(unless its got mega miles on is grossly worn from lack of oil changes) If its making the noise the lower sprocket on the crank is going to have bite marks from the links. The longer you leave it the more wear on the guides and upper sprocket. Its a pretty annoying sound if you drive around with the roof up and no radio.

If it was my car I would only do something about it if it didn't go away once you get the rpm over 2000rpm. I would also remove the rocker cover and look down in the tensioner to get a gauge of how much stick out there is on the piston ( indication of increase in chain length).

Ill say it again, do not hand sand the worm or dremel it.
