Default threw a rod because i drove through water...

Hey guys,

I was driving through a parking lot at a gas station. I didn't realize how deep it was, and it looked like there was only like 2" of water. When I hit the water it turned out to be around a foot to a foot and a half deep (it was monsooning here), and the whole parking lot was flooded. The car stalled out, and I got it out of the water and tried to crank it, and it just made a thump sound.
It turned out I threw a rod...when we pulled it onto the tow truck there was oil coming out of the bottom end of the motor.

1. do I have any chance of getting it all put on the insurance of the gas station? (there were no signs or cones exc. warning about the flooded parking lot)

2. If so, what steps do I take with the store?

3. If not, can I file it on my personal full coverage insurance?

(I have the stock air box if you all were wondering)

thanks,

brent

1.) No. If the street in front of your house is flooded and you did this, would do you sue your local government for not letting you know that it was flooded?

2.) See Above.

3.) Insurance companies do cover flooding so I am sure you can get this covered. I am not 100% sure though, just give them a call and find out.

Good Luck!

First time I heard this stuff.
Break a rod when 1/8 of block dip in the water while running?

Do you think your rod is already in bad health then before the flood stuff?

With the right (or wrong ) intake, you can break a rod by starting your car in the am after the intake tube has filled with water. I've changed an engine for someone because of it.

All it takes is a few tablespoons.

Hmmmm amazing how my two old irons Beetle & my CJ5 survived swimming under the water all day long and never had such problem.
I swear between the mud and the water from the swamp, I'm sure there are catfish living in my cylinders.

British Leyland land Rover another car James Bond can use that will survive under the water.

Heads up,

A friend took out an oil pan going too fast through an intersection with deep dips and his homeowners insurance somehow covered a total replacement engine.

Hell, even my 2002 eclipse survived a similar event and that thing was made of toothpicks and tinfoil.

I disagree. All he needed to do was get a good healthy gulp of water into the intake and especially if he cranked it afterward--easy hydrolocked engine. While it would be tough to get an appreciable amount of water into the stock intake under most conditions, it wouldn't be too hard I'll bet if you hit deep water with some speed.
